John tailors his approach to fit the learning style, goals, and musical taste of each individual student. All students are taught to read tablature and chord diagrams. Students are strongly encouraged to read standard notation and develop a practical understanding of music theory through concepts that can be illustrated in the music they are learning.
Long term and short term goals are clearly defined and progress is measured regularly. Above all, the objective is to have fun while being inspired to perform, understand, and deeply appreciate music.
John Doll holds a Master's in Guitar Performance from East Carolina University where he held a Teaching Assistantship from 2009-2011. He has participated in Master Classes with acclaimed guitarists from around the globe. John has released singles on iTunes and his recordings have been streamed on Spotify and other radio sites.
John studied improvisation and electric guitar with Dustin Hofsess, developing a personal style influenced by jazz fusion. John became interested in the classical guitar after hearing works by Latin American composers such as Agustin Barrios, Jorge Morel, and Antonio Lauro. One of John's early classical influences was Charles Vaughn, whom he went on to study with for 10 years. He also studied guitar and interpretation with Mike Mosley at UNC Charlotte where he completed his Bachelor's in 2009.
John taught undergraduate guitar classes and private lessons at East Carolina from 2009-2011. Apart from college, he has also taught privately for more than 12 years. John has experience in a wide range of musical styles and is a registered Suzuki Guitar Instructor with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
John was on the faculty of Community School of the Arts in Charlotte for two years. In 2016 he launched his private teaching practice in downtown Waxhaw.
John's patience and willingness to share more information on Guitar theory, strumming and picking techniques has helped me a lot in understanding and practice well. The tips and techniques that I have learned during the lessons has given me the confidence to pick up the song tablature and continue practice on my own. Thank you John.
John Doll has been something of a wonder in teaching my child, who is 8 years old. Somehow he coaxes real songs out of a little guy who hardly ever practices. John can play anything you ask or a child would ask, without thinking twice. This is great when it comes to putting a classical guitar spin on ACDC, then morphing into James Taylor, Eagles, Taylor Swift, then hopping back to the lovely Ode to Joy. He is a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend him!
My son thoroughly enjoyed his lessons with John. John is a truly gifted musician and his talent is vast. My son was always excited to go to his lessons; and would enjoy showing us what he learned when he got home. I was impressed with how quickly he caught on and I give a lot of the credit to John. I would highly recommend him.
John is a wonderful, patient teacher. He works hard to teach to the interests and tastes of his students than taking a 'one-size-fits-all' approach straight from a book. My son's skill and interest has increased dramatically under John's tutelage.
Live Music Reviews
John was very professional throughout this process. He was always quick to return emails and offer great suggestions. Most importantly, his playing was intuitive. It was exactly what I had imagined, but better. Everybody I talked to said something about the guitarist. He was magical. He moved the entire room with one song after another. If I was trying to make a name sending guitarists, then I would send John. Enough said. Make it happen captain.
Great at taking direction and delivering on what is described as well as showing up on time and being professional. John is incredibly talented, incredibly humble and just an all around genuine nice person. I would recommend him to anyone!

There is parking and entrances in front and behind the building. On the ground level, above each entrance is a sign that says, "Created in the Carolinas". Both entrances open to a hallway. My studio is along this hallway toward the front of the building, room 250.
